Our Story

Tanisha Akinloye, the founder of the Pea Ridge Partnership, like so many others in Polk County has deep roots in the Pea Ridge community, having been born and raised on Pea Ridge Road. Her family's history is intertwined with the fabric of Polk County, where she, her relatives, and citzens on Pea Ridge collectively are the largest Black landowners in the Polk County. This remarkable legacy is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the enduring spirit of the African American community in Polk County.

Tanisha's ancestors were some of the founding members of Pea Ridge Road, establishing a significant presence in the region. Her great-grandfather, along with her uncle and aunts, played a crucial role in the local economy by buying and selling land, which laid the foundation for future generations. They were sharecroppers, business owners, real estate investors, blacksmiths, and farmers who cultivated cotton and corn fields, thus contributing to the landscape and the heart of the area.

The influence of Tanisha's family extends beyond land ownership; her grandmothers were both ordained ministers, exemplifying a strong commitment to faith and community service. This religious heritage continued with her mother, who also became a minister, further instilling values of leadership, dedication, and community engagement in Tanisha and her family.

Tanisha's father carried on the family legacy of land ownership, emphasizing the importance of economic empowerment and self-sufficiency. His commitment to buying and selling land has inspired Tanisha to continue this work, reinforcing the idea that land ownership is a vital component of generational wealth and stability for the African American community.

Pea Ridge is more than just a location; it serves as a historical and cultural touchstone for many African Americans who moved to Tryon, North Carolina, in search of better opportunities. The Pea Ridge area has been a starting point for countless families seeking improved work and pay, making it a significant chapter in the story of African American migration and resilience.

Through the Pea Ridge Partnership, Tanisha Akinloye is dedicated to preserving this rich history while fostering community development and empowerment. Her commitment to her heritage and her proactive approach to enhancing the lives of those in her community reflect the profound impact that one individual can have in honoring the past while building a brighter future for generations to come.
